Meeting Shakira: A Lesson in Humanity

Meeting Shakira: A Lesson in Humanity

I want to share a story about meeting Shakira by accident on a busy morning in 2011. It’s a story I tell often, not to brag about a celebrity encounter, but because of the profound lesson in humanity I walked away with that day.

The Bear That Started It All

It began the night before at a fundraising event in Hollywood. Usually, these events end with a standard gift bag, but that night I walked out with a three-foot-tall brown teddy bear. As a grown man carrying a giant plush toy, I was an easy target for my friends. “Some guys get the girls,” they joked, “and Rob gets the bear!”

The next morning, acting on a tip about a hotel near Hollywood Boulevard with “the best coffee and pastries in L.A.,” I decided to stop by before heading back to San Diego. After a long search for parking and a rather underwhelming, overpriced latte, the atmosphere in the lobby suddenly shifted. Men in suits with earpieces began clearing the area. Shakira was arriving to receive her Star on the Walk of Fame.

I realized this was my moment. I ran to my car, grabbed the giant bear, and headed for the crowd.

A Million-to-One Shot

The scene outside was chaotic sea of fans and press as far as the eye could see. A security guard saw me approaching with the teddy bear and laughed. “There is no way you’re getting that to her,” he said. I almost turned back, figuring that even if I did reach her, I’d just get a polite, distant “celebrity thank you.”

But the fans around me had a different plan. When they saw the bear, they began pushing me toward the front, determined to help me get the gift to her.

The Heart of a Superstar

When Shakira finally appeared, I was struck by how small she seemed—only 5’2″ compared to the “larger than life” persona we see on screen. Standing at 5’10”, I felt like King Kong in front of her. But it was her spirit that truly filled the space.

Her eyes lit up when she saw the bear. She didn’t just take the gift; she reached out and squeezed my hand with genuine warmth. In that moment, I saw her treat everyone—from the press to the fans in the back—like family. She was a walking example of humility and grace. It felt like a “good slap” to my soul, reminding me of how we should all treat one another.

A Lasting Inspiration

That day changed how I see the world. I’ve since become a fan of her entire musical catalog; as a guitar player, I’m constantly impressed by her range. In 2022, when I heard her song “Acróstico,” the melody moved me so much that I picked up my guitar and wrote a solo based on the chorus she sang with her sons. It brought me right back to that morning in 2011.

I hope one day I can tell her in person how much that encounter meant to me—and that my personal tagline, “Stay Awesome,” was born from seeing her heart that day.

I tell this story because I truly believe that if we all looked at the world with the same love and gratitude that Shakira showed a man with a teddy bear, we would live in a much more beautiful world.
